COP OUT

Are we still concerned about the environment and climate change?

Over the last 18 months the pandemic has been the number 1 concern for most people. Now, with the start of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26),the environment is back in people's minds.

The recent IPCC report found that the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees C will be exceeded by 2040. This has led to the re-emergence of environmental groups and figureheads promoting activism and a greater discussion about the environment.

Now that we are beginning to emerge out of the pandemic, the focus once more is on the role of individuals in addressing environmental concerns such as climate change. By analysing trends in energy consumption, travel, food sustainability, recycling and environmental activism, we ask whether people are doing enough and what more needs to be done.

The report also discusses whether an individual can pick and choose how they play their part in addressing environmental concerns, whether it's ok to be an environmental hypocrite and how an over reliance on self-motivation coupled with insufficient governance is hampering the fight against climate change.
